This is the common exchange I have while reminiscing with friends or colleagues about high school and the topic eventually turns to prom — a milestone event I have never attended.
In my day (a phrase that already dates me), it was not yet popular to attend prom in a group, sans date. In fact, it was unheard of at my co-ed, traditional Catholic high school. So I didn’t go, because, as I’ve answered hundreds of times to the kind incredulity of my friends, no one asked me. Despite the predictions of my teenage self, I sur-vived. And, if anything, the pang of missing out on what is often hyped as the quint-essential high school memory, has probably contributed in some way to my being both adventurous and comfortable doing things on my own.
However, it’s still nice to be asked.
Invitation is another area impact-ed by the pandemic. I was blessed, pre-COVID-19 days, to have a fairly active social calendar having entered this season of parent-hood that doesn’t require the availability of a babysitter as a prerequisite for a night out. However, the invitations to weddings, birthday and anniversary parties, fundraising events, etc., are currently on pause.
There is one area of our lives where invitation need not be put on hold. In fact, not only is it important — it’s necessary — and that area is our Catholic faith.
I can hear the reflex excuses; everyone’s “Zoomed” out; I’m quarantining at home; it’s too awkward; etc., etc.
However, be honest, even pre-COVID-19 re-strictions, lock-downs, cancellations — how often have you invited someone into your faith life? Why not invite someone to Mass; participate in a Bible study together; pray the rosary together or share a favorite resource?
I would imagine that for the more than 100 individuals who will be participating in this year’s Rite of Election, their journey began with an invitation, either directly or by someone’s witness. And that is what leads them to join our family of faith during the Easter Vigil.
This Lenten season, as you consider your “to do and not to do” lists, why not place “in-vite” at the top. You may just be surprised who accepts.
