For a group of neighborhood children, living the mission of the Eucharist meant turning an otherwise ordinary summer day into a way to help other children.
Most days the Schreuder and Pojar children, while in their family carpools on their way to and from activities, pass The Ark, Catholic Charities Diocese of Kalamazoo’s agency that serves as a safe haven for teenagers living apart temporarily from their families. One summer day, the close-knit group of friends decided they’d channel their summer doldrums into creating a custom theatrical production with the goal of raising money for the charity.
The group of young thespians put together an original play centered on the theme of Halloween. They even went door to door to sell admission tickets to their neighbors. On the day of the performance the altruistic cast, led by their creative director Jane, collected tickets and also solicited the audience for additional donations. All money collected from their endeavor was donated to The Ark (shown above: children, family members and Ark employees).
Why not save up for the latest video game or toy instead? Jane answered quickly, “because I love kids and I love helping kids.”
“But you are a kid,” chimed in her cast mate and friend Kendra, who added that she appreciated helping the kids that “might live on the roads.”
So it was just recently on a blustery wintery Friday evening these young do-gooders paid a visit to the Ark to present them a special card along with a check for $192. “You have done so much for a lot of people so we want to do something for you” noted the kids in the card. The Ark staff greeted them enthusiastically and thanked them profusely for their gift.
